For weeks to months now I have been running on autopilot. I feel a lot of people can relate to this and even the tell tale signs of telling ourselves,
"I'll get to that eventually"
"I just need a break in the day for this!"
"I can definitely do that for you later."
"If only I had enough time"
And how often does this train of thought just have us end up in a cycle of putting things off, having a to do list that's a foot long. Not to mention the internalized shame of not finishing tasks, feeling like you've failed yourself and others who count on you and sometimes you actually sabotage opportunities for yourself. I have done this plenty of times; I've missed out on so many gigs, birthdays, relaxation opportunities because of this train of thought.
I've had friends, mentors and teachers alike tell me so many times " You have to make the time." This can be difficult with those with a more distracted executive function or a overthinking brain. So, how can one who is always on the go physically and mentally finally sit down to create their list, do their tasks and feel at peace with themselves?
Start completely over. No, I am so serious. It's about literally starting today or whenever you're reading this again telling yourself; if I can read this post; I can make a small list of what I need to do today. I'll start with you! Start over each day until it gets easier.
Today's List
Write a blog post about making a list with my squrriel brain on 100
Continue maintaining a classroom until 3:30
Drink the rest of my coffee and water
Respond to an email. (I actually already did this and I add it anyway so my brain gets happy that something is complete!)
Just four things;no matter how big or small can help.
You may also need to honestly;phone a friend. I have issues myself when it comes to cleaning my apartment; I have to call a friend. Or I will put on a podcast, or a movie I have already watched so I get the effect that someone is in the room and thus I suddenly trick my brain into speed cleaning. This is a body doubling technique which also works if you have someone you trust in your space.
I may of went on a tangent but hey; this is my blog and my web space. I hope whoever reads this can at least make their list and know that they don't have to try to make that book that they started 5 years ago. You can start over.
You don't have to continue that video you started 3 months ago.
You can start over. At any time.
Just like today I am committing to myself to start writing more posts daily to weekly about my thoughts and what I feel someone may need.
I hope today; you are able to complete just one task that's been running in your mind like a hamster on a wheel. I hope you are able to know that you deserve to have your dishes clean, you deserve a clean home, you deserve a cuddle, you deserve a hug from as stranger if need be.
Make an action today is aligns with what you need currently and in the past.
Maybe I'll start a blog challenge.
Who knows?
Thank you,
ZWArtist.
